The Haut Koenigsbourg from the 12th century was fully rebuilt and it faithfully respects the architecture of the Middle Ages. The castle of Haut Barr, overhanging the town of Saverne and also nicknamed the “eye of Alsace” and numerous other castles running from the north to the south of Alsace.

Christmas time is very beautiful in Alsace! Enjoy this period where cities and villages are dressed of huge decorations and lighting. Have a look at the city lights, the Christmas tree, and don’t miss the traditional Christmas markets running from the north to the south of the region.

Memorial Side

The « Vieil Armand » and its memorial from the First World War, Schirmeck and the Alsace Moselle Memorial which traces the history of the area between 1870 and Franco-German reconciliation. You will also get to visit the Struthof and its European Center of Deported Resistance Fighters.

Neuf Brisach, the octagonal fortress built by Vauban, the Humanist Library in Sélestat , the oldest public library in Alsace, the Lalique museum and its glass and crystal collections.

The Mont Sainte Odile, a spiritual site, Guebwiller and the gothic cloister, the Romanesque Route and its ancient abbeys and churches, and also the Jewish heritage with synagogues, cemeteries and ritual bath.

 

Technical Side

The shiplift built in 1969, enables the Marne-Rhine canal to bypass a set of 17 locks. The Mutzig fortress built by Wilhelm II was the most powerful and largest fortification in the German Empire in 1914. The silver mines in Sainte Marie aux Mines maintained in activity until the 20th century.
